Local arts focus of Bicentennial celebration

Bicentenary 2019

Bahá’ís in St. John’s are planning a celebration – and you’re invited.  Join us at the Signal Hill campus of Memorial University on Nov. 2 to mark the bicentennial of the Birth of the Báb.

On Saturday, Nov. 2, at 2:30, the Bahá’í community of St. John’s will hold a public celebration of the Bicentenary of the Birth of the Báb at Memorial University’s Signal Hill Campus. All are invited to join us to commemorate this day.

This local celebration will focus on arts created by members of our community, including music, dance and fabric arts inspired by the life of the Báb, Whose revitalizing message prepared the world for a new day and the coming of Bahá’u’lláh, founder of the Baha’i Faith.

In addition to these works created within our community, we will welcome Inuit guest musicians and well-known local performer Kathy Stock to share their musical gifts with us.

In the middle of the 19th century—one of the most turbulent periods in the world’s history—a young merchant named Siyyid Ali Muhammad from the city of Shiraz announced that He was the bearer of a message destined to transform the life of humanity.

At a time when His country, Iran, was undergoing widespread moral breakdown, His message aroused excitement and hope among all classes, rapidly attracting thousands of followers. He took the name “The Báb”, meaning “the Gate” in Arabic. Baha’is regard Him as a symbolic gate between past ages of prophecy and a new age of fulfillment.

With His call for spiritual and moral reformation, and His attention to improving the position of women and the lot of the poor, the Báb’s prescription for spiritual renewal was revolutionary. At the same time, He founded a distinct, independent religion of His own, inspiring His followers to transform their lives and carry out great acts of heroism.

The Báb announced that humanity stood at the threshold of a new era. His mission, which was to last only six years, was to prepare the way for the coming of a Manifestation of God Who would usher in the age of peace and justice promised in all the world’s religions: Bahá’u’lláh.

Please join us to publicly celebrate the Bicentenary of the Birth of the Báb, on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2:30 p.m. at the MUN Signal Hill Campus (the former Battery Hotel).
